From 1973 to 1982, Doug worked low-level backcountry jobs for the National Park Service in North Cascades and Glacier national parks. He wrote Grizzly Years on his dad's old typewriter on Huckleberry Mountain, daughter Laurel on his lap. Two years later, son Colin was born. Both visited or lived with Doug in these mountaintop pagodas. It was a golden time of bears and berries.
